The girls did great especially LaKisha, Melinda, and Jordin. – maryheart
LaKisha Jones is far more than just a “belter.” She can control and moderate her singing as well as the best singers “on the market” today – wowzers913
Sanjaya owns the stage when he's on. Watching him dance with the backup singers at the end of the show was cool. This morning the local news called it the "Sanjaya Show." – dotsicle
Gina was much better than she has ever been. Her rendition of "Who Knew" was spectacular, much better than the original. – andre10
We sang. We danced. We screamed. There were so many more songs me and my cousin knew, even our moms were dancing! I got three hugs from JORDIN!!!! I ALMOST FAINTED! – ChrisTucker765
Haley was beautiful and Gina's voice was amazing. I knew when I heard and saw her live why I liked her so much. – moxley
Sanjaya was absolutely an entertainer. All the young girls screamed and yes, some cried. – mom2five
Phil was awesome. "Blaze of Glory" sounded amazing. – idol_freak1994
If you have sensitive ears, you better bring earplugs because the audience response is deafening and totally contagious. – ohJetaime
Every performance was good by all the idols. Jordin did phenomenal. Chris Richardson was awesome. I give it a perfect 10, definitely a huge highlight of my summer. – CoopDogg24
It was my first concert ever, and I'm glad I got off to a good start! The whole concert was just an amazing experience. It was so energetic! AHHH… I LOVED IT! – JBSparksRocks
EVERYONE was OUTSTANDING last night!! The show was just amazing.... the idols were genuine, talented, and simply blew the roof off the Xcel Center. I also got to meet Chris R., Blake, Haley, Chris S., Gina, and Phil! Seriously, there are no words that would do it justice. This concert was fantastic!! – kate4chrisandkat
Overall, a fiercely entertaining show, and certainly the best AI show I've been to. If you can, don't miss it. –seamokeebirdee

American Idol Grapevine
In a very shocking results show, America voted off the young woman that the judges have referred to as the “consummate pro” all season, Melinda Doolittle. The opinions on the results are as varied as Paula’s jewelry. Check out the samples below for an idea of what’s being discussed on the MyIdol Message Boards. Have something to add? Join MyIdol so that you can do so! Start a thread or write a recap. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a snippet for the Idol Grapevine. Either way, we’re eager to have your “Idol” insight!
This is the moment I actually tuned in for. Elliott Yamin is back on the American Idol stage, and heck yes we missed you Elliott. And he's singing that same way that I loved last year. –velcrohead
As a professional jazz musician, my feeling is that Melinda was far and away the best vocalist of the group. From her 1st audition, it was obvious that she is a talented, sensitive, and nuanced musician. Her rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is one of the finest vocal performances I've ever heard. –jazzbobe
“After the break,” says Seacrest, “Maroon 5, more suspense, your results, and Melinda goes home.” Wait, what?! Did he just say Melinda goes home?! Oh! Melinda goes home! Her homecoming to Nashville. Well played, Crestkin. You got me on that one. –onemanswarm
After last night’s performances, I had no doubt that Melinda would make it to the finale and either Jordin or Blake would be gone. However, America had other plans for us. With 60 million votes and a close call, America chose personality over technical abilities. This is simply one of the most astounding results show in Idol history, even more so than when Chris Daughtry was voted off last season in favor of Elliott, Taylor and Katherine. –Damien666
Whether Melinda does a gospel, blues, or rhythm & soul album, it will be much better music than anything we have on the radio today. People may not think she's a "commercial" sell-out, but the music industry needs her presence more than they realize. –Slinky123
Jordin and Blake did what they needed to do. They inspired the most people to pick up the phone and vote the most times. That is what this competition is all about. –Sarah0221
Blake won the coin toss and asked Jordin if she wanted to go first or second. She chose second. Blake gave away the pimp spot to Jordin! --justafan7
I was very certain in my own mind that Melinda would go last night. The clip of her reception at home clinched it. She drew a very small crowd, compared to the others. She is the best by far, but just doesn't have the fan base of the other 2. –amberly_16
Congratulations to Jordin and Blake--there was no doubt in my mind that these two were going to be the final two--it just makes sense. Good luck to Melinda, there's no worries for her anyway; she'll get offers like crazy. –Malaka
Melinda was very reserved last night. She seemed really "ok" w/ the decision. She will go very far and I think she knows that. –ClayArocks
This will be a very unpredictable finale for the first time I think…both different and talented in different ways... I will for sure be watching. Good luck to both!!!! --sflyaa25
Elliott was absolutely the highlight of this season for me. He was so amazing. He brought back the excitement of American Idol. I hope his record sales soar. –Emily24
It has never happened this late in the game. But the home page poll says that 72% of us were completely floored last night. I have to say I'm a little shocked too. I never all season pictured Ryan saying "Melinda, you're going home!" --AIFan211

American Idol Grapevine

They all will have great careers....and I wish them great success!! Good luck to all of the three remaining!!! –amabenjul
The void that will be left is immense and the summer concert in August is too far off to provide much solace. But compared to last year's semi-finals, this year provided us with some great drama and outstanding performances. I will be sorry to see any of them go, even Blake, who made a dramatic comeback tonight. –Damien666
Believe me, Nutbush the community is nothing near as spectacular as Nutbush the song. This is what I was hoping for out of Melinda…one thousand percent better than the first song. Oh man, I'm loving this…loving it too much to type about it. I want Melinda to have a career every bit like Tina's… --velcrohead
His producer song is “This Love,” by Maroon 5. He’s definitely getting the best songs ever tonight. I love his voice on this one. This is like the perfect style for Blake, and he pulls it off almost flawlessly. I actually almost liked it better than the original (and I’m an Adam fan). Brilliant. –claena
I like all 3 of them--they are all very talented and I will be fine with whoever wins this thing.
Last year I didn't feel that way. –tufntender
Melinda should get to the finals. So should Blake. So should Jordin…not a clue what's going to happen tomorrow night. –ProVocalist
So, big kudos to Blake, his best week when it counts. No big wow moment like “Time of the Season,” but it was a solid effort by the man in hip hop leisure wear. –pieceandluv
Jordin: She's found her fashion idol. The empire waist dresses & tops look great on her! I liked the jazz arrangement on "Wishin’.” Simon's song choice was just okay. It didn't give her enough room to shine. "She Worked Hard For The Money,” but had trouble moving around in those shoes. "I Who Have Nothing" made the hairs stand up on my arms, just like the first time... –ibrmg
Rounding out the evening is Melinda, who now has a street named after her. Singing “I’m a Woman” and wearing a grey pant suit (grrr, I have to get the color on my set checked), Melinda challenges her backup singers to show us how it’s done. WOW! 4EAE (forever and ever) I will be a fan. Get me a CD and fast. My only complaint was the song was tooooo short! --Deanie79
Actually if you look at his track record, Simon's taste IS America's taste. With the exception of last year, his pick has won every year (he picked Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia AND Carrie and last year he was pulling for Kat who came in 2nd). --BigDaddyT
All 3 must have talent because they are still there. It is just a matter of preference now…a lot of posts are back and forth over who is better and I am guilty of it as well. –janiceD
Her third song was her choice and she chose well with "I Who Have Nothing.” She sang this earlier in the year and was brilliant...well, she was brilliant again, as she flat out can sing this song. It truly was one of the best performances of the year... Jordin, I believe, will be back next week. –nhdavej
I loved the fact that there were no diversions last night... just singing. It gave me a real chance to appreciate the talent. –m2j2o2

American Idol Grapevine
With very little time before the finale, emotions are definitely running high on the MyIdol Message Boards. Read below for a sampling of what is being said about LaKisha’s departure as well as the live performances by Pink and Barry Gibb. Have something to add? Please do so! Sign up for MyIdol so that you can start a thread or write a recap. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just “borrow” a phrase or two for this Idol Grapevine. Either way, you should enlighten us on your every “Idol” thought!
Pink is on stage! I actually really like her. She’s stuck in this weird pop meets rock place, but I still like her. And she does a good job. Not the highest energy song in the universe, but it was still cool. –claena
Well, that's the end of the run for LaKisha. It was quite a good run, and it should afford her some good opportunities in the future. –velcrohead
With Season Six rapidly approaching its conclusion, the Idols Live Tour is right around the corner. Seacrest promises “The biggest hits, the biggest hair, and the biggest stars of Season Six.” --onemanswarm
Next week, our final three will visit their hometowns in what will surely be an emotional moment—except for Jordin, all the hopefuls are only children. –Damien666
I have to say that whether or not LaKisha hit the high notes that the Bee Gees can, whether or not she followed all advice to the 't", or whether or not she was your favorite... she was one of mine at the beginning... I cried last night when she went home...especially watching her exit tape. She is a very sweet & beautiful person with a beautiful voice. –textingbabe724
I actually liked her “Stayin' Alive” better last night! She infused it with such attitude and really worked the crowd. She will be sorely missed!! I can't wait for her first single. –chicagoloopy
He sang awesome tonight, as always. The problem is he (and the Bee Gees) are so unknown to a great majority of Idol viewers that he sounded different than what they are listening to today. –lunchladylee
DO WHAT CHRIS DAUGHTRY DID WHEN HE GOT VOTED OFF AT 4TH PLACE; MAKE AN ALBUM THAT IS A HUGE SUCCESS AND OUTSELLS THE TOP THREE CONTESTANTS ALBUMS. YOU CAN DO IT LAKISHA, YOU HAVE THE TALENT! --RiverOtter
I think it's good that AI is going to be looking for a good band. I wonder if that would mean singers with the band as well. Any age is a great way to open the door to older people. I think it's a smart move for them. –wesettleshere
Melinda was right when she said that all these weeks they kept giving her great praise and no critiquing. Now they say they want more. Well, I think they should have told her this before, instead of you are great, there is nothing to say --jmtrj69
The song title "Who Knew" (by Pink) was very appropriate . . . who knew she could sing like this? I sure as heck didn't. –The_Soccer_Dude
She went out with class and what a blessed woman she is. I hope she gets everything in life and hope this experience given her a better life for her daughter, a beautiful voice and a person who enjoyed this experience. –aiisthebestever
There's only so much anyone can do with a Barry Gibb song. Melinda is awesome. His songs veer on wishy-washy and the falsetto required obviously put Melinda and LaKisha at a disadvantage. I knew the judges would be miserable this week. –pink_elephant
Wow, not a big Pink fan here, but I thought she was FANTASTIC last night. Does anybody know the name of that song b/c I want to hear it again? –mummer02

American Idol Grapevine
The consensus on the MyIdol Message Boards is that the Idols struggled with the music of the Bee Gees, with a few exceptions here and there. Read below for a sampling of what’s being discussed. Agree? Disagree? Let us know by starting your own thread or writing a recap on the MyIdol Message Boards. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a snippet for the Idol Grapevine, as we did below. Either way, we’re guessing your “Idol” insights are worth sharing!
"How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" – Finally Melinda goes back into the Bee Gees archives! This song is far better suited for her than he previous choice. I got a kick out of her reasoning for changing the lyrics from “How can a loser ever win” to “How can you stop the rain from falling down.” –jimpam86
(Jordin) She is singing “To Love Somebody”– Barry gives major props – no pressure! Lovely control – her flips in and out of head voice, into mix and back to chest – fantastic control – seriously – people her age don’t normally have that! She belts out the notes with amazing accuracy and ease -FairyTailsAusies
With the help of an echo machine and a disco ball, Blake scattted, scratched, beatboxed and danced his way through the song. While Blake may not (okay, cannot) out-sing the divas, he can out-gimmick them, which appears to be his new strategy. The performance was interesting, but not nearly as impressive as last week. –sleepingbeauty37
(LaKisha) As for this performance, she kinda cheated in a way, never really going for the tough vocals, but it was soulful, and that's her thing. I am glad she was on this show this season, but her time is up most likely. –pieceandluv2
OK so this is a weird week with 2 Bee Gees songs for 3 woman and a guy... Too bad Chris Richardson went home--he would have fit right in this week…or Ace Young from last year, falsetto galore. –nhdavej
(Melinda) She's chosen "Love You Inside And Out" for her first shot…not my favorite of her performances cuz there just weren't many options as far as where to take it. That said; it was still flawless for what it was. Not a note missed, not a single frayed nerve showing, not a single word forgotten. I'm actually with Paula on this...consistent but not KA-POW. –ProVocalist
Ryan went on to announce that, in typical Final Four fashion, the contestants would be singing two songs each (that means three next week, kiddies. Oh the joy). He then intro'd the judges and Barry Gibb, who was dubbed "the most successful combination songwriter/producer of all time." –sleepingbeauty37
Blake sang “This Is Where I Come In.” I confess--I've never heard this song before. I kinda liked this, actually. Still, he's a one-trick pony, and the whole beat-boxing thing is wearing very thin for me. –idolwildone
LaKisha – “Run To Me”-OK here's the deal. There is no doubt in my mind that this gal can sing, but she just hasn't made much progress in the performance department. It's like she remembers to perform in the beginning of the song, but then she just blanks out sings with no emotion at all. It sounded very sweet if I closed my eyes, but the second I open them, I don't believe a word she is singing. I think LaKisha realizes this toward the end of every song and then tries to throw a little passion in. –NENA
(Jordin) She used both songs to dispel the "immature kid who hasn't experienced life" thing and sang w/passion, emotion, and good interpretive abilities. Her vocals were outstanding on both, and if she was pitchy on song 2, than most of those singing hits on the radio have the same "pitchiness,” including Barbra Striesand. –TPTB

American Idol Grapevine
Last night, we lost two Idols, and the emotion of the whole experience can certainly be felt when reading the comments in the MyIdol Message Boards. Read below for a sampling of what’s being discussed. Have something to add? Do so! Sign up for MyIdol so you can start a thread or write a recap. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a snippet so we can spread the word along our “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, you should let us in on your every last “Idol” thought!
Phil was never my favorite, but boy I was impressed with his level of class during his last performance. I got kind of choked up (yep, I am emotional) when he went to each judge for a hug, his Navy buddies and family. The whole thing struck me as very heartfelt and emotional. –samiko
With Ryan's usual dramatics we wait with baited breath. LaKisha is safe. Phil (I am so hoping he is safe)...is going home. No! No! Can't be. I am deeply disappointed. Phil, still looking like he's won the lottery, sings "Blaze of Glory" even better than last night. –Deanie79
Time for results. Melinda, Phil, and LaKisha join Ryan at center stage. Melinda, thought to be possibly in danger, is safe. My faith in America is restored. Phil and Lakisha are left, and I wonder if they might not both be going home. Guess not. –velcrohead
We should be so proud of our boy (Chris Richardson). That was the classiest exit ever. You could tell he really meant it when he said he would go home for Blake and he was truly proud to make it as far as he did. Granted, he should have made it farther but he has such a great career ahead of him, 5th isn't too shabby. –GottaGo2Rehab
Did you see tonight Chris was crying during Phil's exit song; you could see Chris in the background wiping his eyes something fierce! -C-RICHFAN
I teared up went Chris left, too. The worst was when they were in the group hug at the end of the show! He has a lot of personality so he'll be ok! --mommyamanda
He also sang,"Blaze of Glory," again. Phil, given your last two weeks, you went out in a blaze of glory. Godspeed my good man.. –spaceyfi7
Bon Jovi was awesome. Period. –pinkhorses
Phil's video montage was set to Carrie's "I'll Stand by You" and featured clips of his daughters. He ended on a high note, both dressed and sounding the best he has all season, singing "Blaze of Glory." –sleepingbeauty37
It was great to see Jon Bon Jovi mentoring. He isn't a judge, no, but he is a professional singer with 20+ years under his belt. He certainly connected with the contestants, especially Phil and Melinda. –Corn_Flakes
I don’t know if it is just me but I notice that the eliminated contestants seem to do better when singing song after eliminated. I wonder if because of the raw emotion or the loss of nervousness. Last night was a great example. Phil sounded a bit better (although hard to improve on his 1st performance) and Chris sounding 10 times better. --msbeau

American Idol Grapevine
It was Bon Jovi night on American Idol and the MyIdol Message Boards are filled with comments on the top six’s ability to rock. Read below to see if you agree with some of what’s being discussed. Care to add your two cents? Do so! Join MyIdol so that you can start a thread or write a recap. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a smidgen to spread the word along our “Idol Grapevine.” So what are you waiting for? Get chatting!
He plays it smooth through the verses, and beatboxes it up, but when he gets to the chorus, he just rocks it out. And I think this is perfect for Blake. And talk about making a dated song current. –claena
Jordin better hope that her performance last week saves her since her rendition of “Living on A Prayer” was dreadful and screechy. Jon tried to help her find the melody, but this girl is no rocker. But unlike Simon, I thought her Adams family outfit had it going on. I still want to see her win, despite this serious misstep. --Damien666
I think Phil knows some Taylor fans are getting behind him now and he did better coming out of the crowd then Taylor did actually. It was by the book, but it's about as good a karaoke job as ever performed on Idol. You can tell he has sung this and he just went for it. If Phil is booted, he goes out on a massive high…three very good performances in a row… --pieceandluv2
This was Kiki’s best performance since “And I’m Telling You” in week one. It was an energetic, soulful performance from the first note to the last, with a smattering of rich, creamy goodness for all points in between. –onemanswarm
(Melinda) When she sings "Have a Nice Day" Jon replies "You've just joined the band." You can't get higher praise than that! I loved the performance...loved the look...loved the expression...loved the vocals...loved the attitude...loved the back to back with the guitarist. –Deanie79
(Chris Richardson) I just about melted 'n died to heaven when he sang the lyrics, "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride.” I thought his voice had a slight lil' twang to it combined with some rock edge (Wooh! that last note of the song was incredible!), which coincided really well with the country/rock vibe of this song! -GeeketteNThePink
Not to take anything away from Blake's talent, because he can sing, but what makes him the next American Idol is he can ENTERTAIN! He doesn't just stand there; he sells every song to the audience just as any great performer does. –humbletiger
Phil's gonna do "Blaze of Glory,” which I personally think is a great choice for him. And here's why: he can work as much country as rock into this song. And guess what folks? Perfect. Everyone complains he shouts...well...that's workin' for him here. Veins a-poppin, blood-a-rushin, teeth-a-grindin', brows-a-scowlin', singin' your guts out -- just what Phil does best. AWESOME. –ProVocalist
I just want to put in a good word for Jordin. People on this board are talking about a bad night for her. I agree--the song was not her best...but not the entire song. Give her kudos for taking a hard song and going out of her comfort zone.... –azchickie
LaKisha sang "This Ain't a Love Song.” Randy thought it started out rough which, oddly, I thought was the best part. I think Kiki's soft voice is 1000x better than her loud voice but the loud voice is what we hear from her 99% of the time. There's no doubt that she could be honed into a fine singer. As they say, she has the chops vocally. –bradcompany
Melinda once again showed why she is the person to beat in this competition. As the other contestants blow hot and cold week to week, she remains consistent. Jon Bon Jovi said she could be their female lead singer. –MELINDAHOLIC
I was a high schooler when Bon Jovi was really big, and I've always been a fan of them. Never had I imagined Chris with the gritty rocker voice, but he sure had it! He impressed the heck out of me big time. –Nancy-Again

American Idol Grapevine
Between the singers going out of their comfort zones, Simon and Ryan fighting, and Martina McBride making a splash as a mentor, country music night produced much fodder for the boards. Check out the statements below for a sampling. Have something to add? Do so! Start a thread or write a recap using the MyIdol Message Boards. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official show recap for Americanidol.com. Or we might just use an excerpt or two for the “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, your voice should be heard!
Personally, I think this song fits Carrie perfectly. But LaKisha's voice was just too big for it. She sounded fine at the beginning, but when she powered up on the chorus, it was just too much. –Gwen4791
(Phil) He gives an outstanding vocal of "Where the Black Top Ends" by Keith Urban and, for the first time, he really connects with the audience. Dressed in a black shirt with silver threads and black pants, he looks a little more tanned than in previous shows. He moves through the crowd with a personable performance and did a very good job of starting off Country night. –Deanie79
(Sanjaya) First off he sounded kinda o.k. in front of Martina. But he wilted once he hit the Idol stage. He totally and utterly did NOT do Bonnie Raitt any justice. –pieceandluv2
Martina tells her to let it fly... They show the band and the music... and Jordin starts off slow, then she starts making the hair on my arms stand on end... and by the end of the song my eyes are watering and I am in awe... this is amazing --nhdavej
Alright, my girl Melinda is up. "Trouble Is A Woman" by Julie Reeves. Here's some scoop: Melinda sang backup on this song with Janet Kenyon for another artist named Gwen Sebastian and that's how she found it. How cute does she look tonight? Especially the hair??? I've been waiting for the stylist to pull out some extensions...fo sho. Anyhoo...all I can say is this: Melinda made me give a bleep about listening to a song no one's ever heard before. –ProVocalist
I was very interested to see how our final seven would handle this genre. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the performances, especially by those whom I would have least expected to perform it well and their versatility was a plus.--QueenOfTheScene
Well dang the judges, I liked the song choice. Chris got all of the words in and I believe the tone of his voice fits country music to a tee. I liked his phrasing and pronunciation but he could have been a lot more animated when singing this little peppy number. He had a couple of pitch problems, but overall I thought it fit his voice and he sang it well. –NENA
Blake: This is one performance by Blake that I really didn't care for. Vocally it was okay but I thought that he looked bored throughout the song with sort of an "I'd rather be beatboxing" visage. I almost got the impression that he wasn't really trying very hard, which is unfortunate because he's really talented. At this stage of the game, you'd best be giving an A performance every night. –av8nradioguy
Tonight was actually interesting and weird at the same time. Ryan pointed out that Simon had a big ego. That folks is no surprise. Sanjaya daring Simon to sing,"Shiny Happy People,” was priceless though.—spaceyfi7

American Idol Grapevine
It was an historic event in America Idol history, and the residents of the MyIdol Message Boards have a lot to say about all that went down during “Idol Gives Back.” Read below for a sampling. Have something to add? Please do so! Sign up for MyIdol so that you can start a thread or write a recap. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a piece of your insight to spread the word along our “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, let us in on your “Idol” insight.
Chris had a better performance tonight than last week…Maybe it was the events at VA, maybe it was song choice, who knows. But tonight there was no nasally tone to the song, even if he was slightly off pitch on a few notes. He's good with the camera and easy on the eyes. –kkppwm
Phil - so much voice, so little clue what to do with it - chooses wisely with "The Change" by Garth Brooks. Taking a hint from his stellar performance last week, he performs this well-crafted country song (and remember, I hate country) quite beautifully. I'm so glad he brought it on this; I felt this performance was right on par with last week's…possibly my favorite of the night. –ProVocalist
The sight of Simon being left not speechless but near physically getting sick over the sights, smells and conditions that he sees in the cesspool that these forgotten souls live in, can only make you realize how horrific this place truly is. –nhdavej
Blake has proven once again that he knows which songs suit his voice and that he cares what viewers want. His rendition was simple, clear and utterly beautiful. Did it touch John Lennon's original? No. But he felt the song and, in turn, we were able to do so as well. –sleeping beauty37
Up next is LaKisha singing Fantasia's "I Believe".....She looks pretty...but I'm not sure I like her version of this song.....she has such a loud voice....and her dynamics are all over the place. She is singin’ the heck outta the song though. –lilkaraokediva
Yeah, Jordin made America believe she truly is inspired this week. I kinda believe her too. She even took out the McHair and just let us see the real Jordin. It was a vulnerable, emotional, human and yet powerful performance. Boy the lighting was sure dramatic for her. It felt like a finals performance. –pieceandluv2
Next AI takes us to a feeding center in Africa, where 150 orphans are fed everyday. In spite of their intense hunger, every child waits until all the children are served before they eat. We could do well to have as much thought and respect for our fellow man. –Deanie79
Everyone sounded good, but I think that the good-to-not-so-good range was much closer this week than in any previous week. –dchambers59
Following the documentary is the one and only Melinda Doolittle, who looks quite comely this evening. Her inspirational song of choice is Faith Hill’s “There Will Come a Day,” which is sappier than a sinkful of dirty dishes. Nevertheless, Meloolittle manages to make the song genuine and unique, a tribute to her skill as both musician and performer. –onemanswarm
Before the show I noted that I had high expectations for this weeks show since the song choices were far more open than most other nights. Well I certainly wasn’t disappointed. I honestly thought that this was one of the best nights this year. I still rate The British Invasion higher, but I was very pleased with what we watched. –jimpam86

American Idol Grapevine
Undoubtedly one of the most controversial Idols in AI history was eliminated last night—Sanjaya Malakar! And where do you think people have gone to discuss this huge event? The MyIdol Message Boards, of course! Read below for just a sampling of what’s being discussed about last night’s results show. Have something to add? Be our guest—better yet, be our member! Join the MyIdol Message Boards so that you can start a thread or write a recap. If we really like your fan recap, we might use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a snippet in our “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, tell us what you’re thinking!
Seacrest calls next Wednesday’s show the most important event in American Idol history, teasing us with the promise of “a duet you’ll have to see to believe.” Those are tall words, Seacrest. You’re gonna have to come with something pretty great to live up to that billing. –onemanswarm
At this point, Melinda Doolittle and Jordin Sparks are the only two contestants left who have not been in the bottom group yet. –The_Soccer_Dude
(LaKisha) She has been a frontrunner for a long time and she really was a good sport about her position. Blake was too. I'm glad he remembered to acknowledge the last two standing. –bridgetmcmahon
Her (Martina McBride) daughter was equally charming and almost stole the microphone from an overwhelmed Seacrest. What a precocious little minx! -Damien666
Randy Jackson has on what is perhaps the coolest hat I have ever seen. Skull and crossbones...quite stylish, I think. –velcrohead
Sanjaya, LaKisha, and Blake are all standing center stage, and Ryan sends my Blake back to the risers. THANK GOD! I sigh relief and giggle maniacally… all is as it should be. Over 38 million votes were cast, but not enough for Sanjaya.—claena
I still don't understand how people are putting Melinda down for being humble. –Dupuis63
It really was time for Sanjaya to go home. I still can't believe that he outlasted Gina and Stephanie. –mythoughts4772
Well Simon may have been smiling but Ryan was clearly feeling Sanjaya's pain as well as Paula. I actually thought Ryan looked really sad for him. –msbeau
I just knew that his voice was totally incompatible with that genre of music. Latin/Smooth R&B fine, Rock fine, but Sanjaya and country is like putting a square peg in a round hole...wasn't going to happen. –thejurist
I was touched when LaKisha held Sanjaya and comforted him. She could have just walked away or gave a quick hug and leave... but she stood right there and held him until he was ok. –dollietwigg
Yes, Sanjaya doesn't have the big voice that she does but he does have "something special"
that legends like Diana Ross & Tony Bennett recognized. –soldierboy
I also liked the shot at the end of Blake drying LaKisha's tears. I think these guys are really close and I don't think it was a ploy to grab votes. –BRUHAHA
Actually, I think it was smart of her to sit in the middle. In the past, I can only remember one time when someone actually picked a group...everyone else was just like Melinda...well, without the sitting part. –KcsMyIdol
It's wonderful that Phil was not in the bottom 3 this time! He needs help in choosing GOOD SONGS. Maybe he's picked some bad ones in the past. Maybe he'll stick to this type of song from now on. –gailadele
When Ryan asked her to choose which group of three she felt would be safe in, she should have gone and sat with the judges. –brooke52204

American Idol Grapevine
It was a night of Latin music and coaching by Jennifer Lopez, and the MyIdol Message Boards are hopping with general mayhem over the evening. Some people thought the Idols really excelled, while others were not fond of the Latin renditions. Read below for a little sampling of what’s being discussed. Have something to add? We’d love to hear it! Create a MyIdol account so that you can start a thread or write a recap. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official show recap for Americanidol.com. Or we might just borrow some of your brilliance to spread the word along our “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, we want your insight into all things “Idol.”
Melinda will most likely always have strong vocals. However, tonight called for something different and she was unable to deliver. It was not a good performance. But I still love the girl!!! -jimpam86
(Haley) She was in tune for the most part and sang with real gusto...and for me it was her best overall performance. Simon, that song IS rushed… --pieceandluv2
It's a fun song, and I like the way Jordin has fun with it. Unfortunately, I don't think this is a very solid performance. She's just a touch behind the band on the beat, and I am finding all but this last part to be just a bit karaoke. I do like that she's doing her own "Oh-Ay-Oy's." -velcrohead
Tonight's show features guest mentoring by Jennifer Lopez. I must admit that she seems like a genuinely nice, open, and likeable person. –Gwen4791
Singing "Conga" and moving offstage, LaKisha gives a very good vocal although I wonder if she is totally on key. My biggest problem is that, even though she is trying to have fun, it doesn't register in her face. –Deanie79
Phil is up next singing “Maria, Maria,” which I never in a million years would have picked out for him. But it sounds like he slowed it down a little and made more of a ballad out of it than I’ve heard in the song before. And, while his vocals are mostly good, it was like he sucked all of the Latin vibe out of the song. –claena
Chris was one of my original favorites, but has been letting me down lately. Tonight, he did NOT disappoint. I thought his performance was one of his best. And ok, J-Lo had something useful to contribute by suggesting he change the key. The song really showed off his range and was great for his voice. –bessie737
Big surprise: this week enabled a few weaker performers to do better, and showed the weaknesses of a few of the stronger performers. –EttaCandy
Blake chose an excellent song that shows off his stylish voice. Blake has a very unique pronunciation that gives all of the songs he sings a special quality. It is very easy to make the songs his own. –Raimundo
How did Sanjaya forget the lyrics to No Doubt's "Bathwater" during Gwen Stefani week, yet was able to sing several lines almost perfectly in Spanish tonight? It’s one of life's unanswerable questions. -The_Soccer_Dude

American Idol Grapevine
The MyIdol boards are a flurry of excitement, anger, joy, outrage, and just about every other emotion that you can think of. Chris Sligh was eliminated last night, and people have a lot to say about that, as well as many other aspects of the show. Read below for some comments! Have something you’d like to add? Join MyIdol so that you can do so! Start a thread or write a fan recap. If we really enjoy your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use bits and pieces for the “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, your opinions should not go to waste!
Fame is not an issue of talent. This Sanjaya phenomenon is unknown as to why he's obtained such a strong fan base that's keeping him in the competition, but make no mistakes… Sanjaya is the most famous Idol so far this season. –TamyrazAllThat
(Phil Stacey) The guy has been getting better and better, and had one of the best performances of the entire night…a FLAWLESS vocal, of a very difficult song. I voted my buns off for him…absolutely ridiculous that he was in the bottom 3. –Shooter_McGavin
(Chris Sligh) I know he kind of made a mess of the Police song on Tuesday, but he has a good voice. And he DEFINITELY should not have gone before Sanjaya or Haley! -seymour51
I've always thought that Phil didn't get enough credit, but it doesn't really surprise me he was in the bottom 3. He doesn't have much of a fan base. He's rarely talked about on the boards. –DemonicVixon
Chris Sligh has a sweet voice, and a lovable personality. The swing vote must have gone another way when he tried rhythm/beat song. Even Gwen Stefani thought his rhythm/beat needed some practice. –orangeade
I don't know about you, but at this point I'm already convinced that Haley can sing well. I don't really care if she's "pitchy,” “cabaret,” or even off key some. What I would like to see is entertainment. The winning combination? Song choice and entertainment at this point. –djcool
I hope Chris Sligh knows he has many loyal fans. I know many of us feel we didn't do our duty as Chris Sligh fans. I'm not going to lie, Tuesday night, I was not a fan of his performance, but OVERALL, it is apparent he CAN sing, so I hope he continues. –lainey80
(Haley) She's pretty, cute, and has a nice voice, but I'm sorry--Soooo many girls sound like her or better. Plus, she isn't unique. She's just ok..... –poohbeargirlinct
Did you hear Chris S say that to Phil? I bet Phil told him he was safe and bet him $50 that he was safe...Looks like they were good friends... –armywife
I enjoy the show each and every week and I vote for Sanjaya. I'm not 12 and I actually enjoy the sound of his voice. –kittyphil
(Sanjaya) I was shocked that none of the judges pointed out he forgot his words Tues, but whatever--at this point he could walk out on stage and jump rope for a minute and half and still get votes…it’s ridiculous. –LilBitFiesty
Phil, unfortunately, does not seem to have built up a huge fan base. Taylor had a ridiculous fan base last year and so does Blake this year. –philszu
Why do you guys insist on saying Sanjaya is ruining the show for you? The judges brought him there, and America keeps voting him in. You all act like he is personally responsible for it all. He is there like everyone else, and if the people keep voting for him it just works in his favor. –bamagirl35033

American Idol Grapevine
It was Gwen Stefani week on American Idol, and the viewpoints on the MyIdol Message Boards are about as varied as Phil Stacey’s hats. Read below for a sampling of what’s being discussed. Have something to add? By all means, be our guest…or even better, be a member! Start a thread or write a fan recap. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official show recap for Americanidol.com. Or we might just use an excerpt or two to spread the “Idol” word on the grapevine. Either way, we want to hear what you have to say!
Donna Summer would have a tough time topping that amazing performance and I honestly think Melinda did a better version. –jaduck
This was my favorite performance from Gina so far. This song, I felt, was perfectly suited to her voice, particularly because she has that little "ism" of falling off at the end of her phrases. It works for this song. I thought she looked the part, felt the part and sang the part. Well done. –ProVocalist
Phil is not my favorite guy, but tonight I really thought he did excellent! I'm not sure he has a strong following, but I would guess that tonight it may have gotten stronger. I thought that his song selection was perhaps the best of the night. It brought out the true beauty of his voice. –jimpam86
(Chris Richardson) I really, really liked this. Gwen was worried about his “Vocal Olympics,” but I don’t think she needed to. He only used what was necessary to make it work for him. He was bopping again, but he’s toned it down quite a bit, so I’ll give him a pass on that. I enjoyed the performance. –dchambers59
Blake has that Euro feel/vibe about him. He returns to straight up singing. O.K., vocally, it wasn't amazing. However, even when you have your back turned you can feel the groove in his voice. He is right there where he needs to be in a song. It's impeccable. –pieceandluv2
Sligh can take comfort in the fact that he's a genuinely good singer. He has his own personality and it extends to his music. I thought his choice tonight was very interesting. The start was absolutely superb…sublime vocals. Once he finished the chorus, the band and the singer seemed to have divorced on stage. They were out of sync. He was a step ahead and the band was chopping through trees, rowing upstream in the Amazon and fighting anacondas to get to him. –Sabier
Jordin takes big risks and it is paying off for her. “Hey Baby” isn't easy to carry-off, but she had no problem with it, except for the slow start. She also looked young and fresh, as noted by Gwen. I'm hoping against hope that she keeps on improving and becomes the next American Idol.—Damien666
Haley Scarnato – “True Colors” - That was sweet. It was light and simple…the kind of performance that really doesn't grab anyone at all in anyway, bad or good. She should stick to the sexy upbeat pop star stuff like last week--that's where she'll get the votes, but this was nice. –Stumpythewalrus
Wearing extensions from the Gina Glocksen collection, LaKisha finishes her song with a note so massive that light is temporarily unable to escape from her mouth. Randy sums up LaKisha’s performance as resembling that of a “true, fly diva.” --onemanswarm
If one of the goals of American Idol is to find someone interesting, original, creative and unique, we can stop looking. Creating the one truly captivating, memorable event of the evening was Sanjaya. The look was amazing! It was of the Boy George, Liberace, Prince variety--and I mean the flamboyancy. –Deanie79

American Idol Grapevine
Results nights are always filled with angst and the MyIdol Message Boards are no different after the show ends. Some were happy with the results last night, however. That’s what makes the message boards fun—the varying opinions. Read below for a taste of what’s being discussed right now. Have something to add? Start a thread or write a fan recap and do it! If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use an excerpt for the “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, you have something to say and the rest of MyIdol is ready to hear it!
This guy is talented, adorable, a great musician and SUPER marketable!!! How could he have been in the BOTTOM two??? UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!! We need to vote, vote, vote for Chris next week!!!!!!! --WormsAreFunny
(Chris) He's not one of my favorites, but he sounded awesome this week and I actually voted for him based on his vocals. I was surprised to see him in the bottom 2 after what a good vocal he had. –Shooter_McGavin
There are a handful of very talented singers on AI, and Stephanie Edwards is one of them. I was shocked, first of all, that Sabrina was given the heave-ho a couple of weeks ago, and now Stephanie, too. –MacBooker
Seriously-- out of all the remaining contestants, whose CD would you buy for 18 bucks and know that it would be decent? Personally, I would buy a Jordin’s , Gina’s, and possibly Chris Richardson’s or Blake's. –inncntnswt32
Yea, although I agree that Stephanie was cut too soon, I wasn't overly shocked or anything because I doubt she would have won the competition. –ProvocativeWoman
I really hoped that Stephanie could have stayed in the competition longer... perhaps to the top 4 at least. She has such a beautiful, pleasing quality to her singing voice. I really believe that her career will take off from here as she is one of those who is very gifted vocally and you can tell that she really loves to sing. –AIRDREAMER
Congratulations Stephanie and job well done for getting as far as you did. I am one of those that surely believed you would remain as one of the final 10.—rosiejane
Ms. Edward's star already shines bright, and in a few short years she will make the sun jealous!! Wonderful voice, beautiful young lady, and very charming and well spoken. I'm very sad that she's leaving -- but I'm confident that she'll have a very successful career for many years to come!! --tommyaustin
I was really surprised to see him in the bottom two. My guess would have been Gina or Chris S. I thought Chris R. did really well--I felt like he took Peter's advice to heart and gave a good performance because of it. –Gator_Fan
(Stephanie)I truly will miss those outfits she wore every week…the best looking and best dressing idol. She should be modeling or providing commentary. –oldschoolmusic
The judges said it was his (Chris) BEST performance so it was shocking to see him in the bottom -justen
When Ryan delivered the bad news to Stephanie, she and Chris hugged. He whispered something in her ear that made her laugh. Any ideas what he said?? --golightly
(Chris) He would DEF be missed on the tour. He's the whole reason why I'm going…well he and Blake, but more Chris. I think Blake would miss him too since they seem to be such good friends already. –Steph519
Why was Alaina Alexander sitting with Chris Richardson’s family tonight--is there something going on between them??? –Unbreakable34

American Idol Grapevine
Last night was British Pop Invasion Night on American Idol, and the word on the MyIdol Message Boards is that it was a whole lotta fun. Read below for what we’ve been hearing through the Idol Grapevine. Have something to add? By all means, be our guest! Start a thread or write a recap. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official show recap for Americanidol.com. Or we might just use bits and pieces to keep spreading the word on the Grapevine. Either way, let your opinions be known!
First of all, I need to eat some crow. I've been very critical of Sanjaya for weeks, on every thread and every board. However, I thought Sanjaya. Was. Entertaining. There, I said it. Please pass the ketchup (to put on my crow). –EttaCandy
Since I've always found this song a little bit creepy for some reason, I'm kind of hoping Haley's pretty voice will do something for it for me. And it did! She's singing well. She's flirty. She's on pitch. She's remembering all her words. She looks adorable and appears comfortable onstage...AND she has great gams. –ProVocalist
Gina sang "Paint it Black" - Hey, y'all. Gina's back. This was another good song choice. I loved the whole look. I loved the personality and edge in her voice tonight. She's still having small diction problems but, for the most part, I did understand what she was saying. –Gwen4791
Chris R. is up next singing “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” acoustic with just a guitar. Nice! He’s a little boy band for my taste, but the boy can sing. And I love the rhythmic take he’s offering up on this song. It’s nice to hear him just sing a song and not go for first prize in the Vocal Olympics. –claena
I like this song, and I like Blake singing it. Someone should probably turn down the backup singers just a hair, since they're overpowering him just a tad. By the middle of the song, they have the mix down fairly well. I don't know if it's the fact that I really love this song or that I'm a big fan of B-Shorty, but I was totally down with this performance. Totally. I feel goofy for even saying it like that, but I loved it. –velcrohead
Melinda Doolittle = “As Long As He Needs Me”-Show’s over, folks--Elvis has left the building, the fat lady has sung, thank you for coming to the show and, if you’re drinking, please don’t drive home! I give you your 2007 American Idol. --jaduck
Jordin Sparks gave me chills, big time. I have not felt them like that since Kelly Clarkson. We have been looking for the next Kelly Clarkson and this girl could be it. She's not really like Kelly, but her poise and her down to earth bubbly personality...and those vocals...WOW. She was all that and a massive bag of designer chips. –pieceandluv2
Stephanie tackled Dusty Springfield's “You Don't Have to Say You Love Me.” She sounded great when performing for Lulu at the piano but, on stage, it was a nervous and timid performance. –Damien666
Unfortunately, I don't think Phil will be breezing through. I think he's at the dead end of "Tobacco Row-ow-ow-ow-ow-oad". The song was good; the performance was good, the make-up was better. Still, I just wanted it to be over so that I could see what Sanjaya would do with his hair. –Icoffman
Chris Sligh is doing a Taylor Hicks move and is coming up out of the audience (people who went to the "Idol" summer tour last year know what I'm talking about). He's singing "She's Not There" reasonably well but all of the fans reaching for him might be a bit of a distraction. I like the mike stand poke he made at Simon, who backed up against the judges' table. –indigo15
“Diamonds are Forever” - Kikki Ms Jones picked the wrong song, but it didn't matter. While not being anywhere near her best performance, this girl can flat out sing. She did, however, look like a Christmas tree with her green dress and all that bling-bling. --irishinvegas

American Idol Grapevine
The opinions about the Top 12 results on the MyIdol Message Boards run the gamut from disappointment to shock to complete satisfaction. Read below for a sampling. Want your voice to be heard? Create a MyIdol account so that you can do so! Start a thread or write a recap. If we like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a smidgen of your brilliance to spread the word throughout our “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, let your opinions on the number one show in America be known!
(Sanjaya) I like the kid. He is cute and has great huggability but he is not Sundance Head. I miss Sundance. He could have done Motown proud. –DaughtryFan407
As for Sanjaya, I feel for him. Did you notice his reaction? The poor kid walked back looking defeated once again. His head was held down, as he walked painfully slow back to the contestants’ seats…not rejoicing that he was safe at all. I truly believe that if Sanjaya would have waited 2 years, got some more voice lessons, we would be seeing a stronger voiced male singer. --kgrillo
Heck even Simon can't wipe that genuine smile from Sanjaya even after assaulting him on stage with every synonym for dreadful. Admit that he does have some charm on stage. This young adolescent charm brings out the pre-teen vote even more than the producers want you to believe. –nrocme
Phil sounded really great this week, so I was surprised he was in the bottom three. But actually, from previous performances, I'm surprised he's still here. He almost always sounds great by the end on the song, but in the past he's been really shaky at the beginning of each song. –evansmom222
I keep comparing Sanjaya to Michael Jackson....not their singing so much but the way he acts and talks...though I am sure he is a sweet boy I really feel he should of gone home a long time ago....Brandon was way better than him....even with forgetting the words.—grbrrdaisy25
I think Brandon did himself in and didn't have the fan base to see him through. He seemed so promising but he never delivered; maybe folks just got tired of waiting. –meadowlight
Phil, Blake, and Chris S. May find themselves in the top 5 -djlapri
I was not surprised about last night's results. I do have to give Brandon Kudos for being very gracious in the outcome. He said he committed the cardinal sin of forgetting the words to his song and felt he was going home. I wish him well and hope he can continue in the music industry. –kgrillo
As for Brandon, as I said in the last thread, he seemed to lose the passion he had from his audition. His audition blew me away. I’m so sad to see him go but, based on his last few performances, think it was fair. –TheGypsy
I feel really sad at what people on this board are doing to Sanjaya. He is just a kid and a shy, sensitive one at that. I don't know where the votes are coming from that are keeping him on the program, but it is not his fault he is still there. Every year there area talented people that leave too early. --barbpw
Sanjaya seems like such a nice kid! Even after all the criticism, he smiles and is very polite. Diana Ross even said that Sanjaya is love. He must have a wonderful personality. I think with more vocal lessons and performing experience he will go far in the business. --chrisnsundacefan

American Idol Grapevine
The Top 12 performed last night, and the reaction on the MyIdol Message Boards is one of utter amazement…read the comments below to see whether that means the reaction was positive or negative! Have something to add? We want to hear it! Start a thread or write a recap on the MyIdol Message Boards. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use an excerpt to spread the AI word on the “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, let us have it!
I love Melinda Doolittle. I want to adopt her. I want to shrink her, put her on a shelf, and listen to her every day. Melinda chooses the song "Home" from the musical The Wiz. Nice choice. And of course, she sounds resplendent. I'd like to go ahead and skip the rest of the competition. –velcrohead
Brandon Rogers-His performance was not bad, but not really great. I love Brandon’s voice, and he had some nice hip action, but he forgot his words at one point. He made a nice recovery, but it can’t have been easy being first up on the big stage. He’ll need some luck this week, I’m afraid. –dchambers59
Blake got panned by the judges for his remake of “You Keep me Hanging On,” but I strongly disagree. He took a tired overplayed song by the Queen of Assisted Living and made it entertaining. He commands the stage and is enjoyable to watch. His hip British butler outfit also reflected a sense of style befitting a potential Idol. –Damien666
Jordin -- I thought she out performed even LaKisha tonite, mostly because LaKisha's song choice. She is really good and has begun to separate herself into the top 3, as the judges said. –oldbuthot
I applaud Chris (Sligh) for attempting to do something completely different with a standard BORING love song. Ignore Simon; keep the spectacles in your nightstand. –jaduck
Phil Stacey is in the enviable position of following Sanjaya and Haley. Diana Ross advises Papa Phil to look at the audience while he is singing. They are people, too. Fulfilling her demands, Phil forgoes the trademark hat and lets his dome roam the stage while he performs “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me.” --onemanswarm
LaKisha Jones-Power. Raw power. Coupled with a natural singing acumen, it forms a devastating combination. While poor song choices was the undoing of the equally talented Mandisa, LaKisha doesn't seem to have that misfortune so far. Fantastic control and delivery. The inspired song choice gave her ample time to display her entire range. She's here to stay. –Sabier
Brandon - sang, Can't Hurry Love - this was a basic karaoke version of a song that did nothing to show off his range or style, whatever they may be. Forgot the words. Tough to go first. Love his vibe, but dang it, he's just not good enough. Single tear. –idolwildone
Gina Glocksen is up next singing “Love Child.” And she does a decent job of it. I thought she was yelling towards the end, and the pop up for the high notes was a little odd and seemed to interrupt the flow of the song. I do agree with Simon, though. There’s not a lot to say about it. It wasn’t horrible and not even close to amazing. It was decent. I like her and her voice, but I wasn’t blown away. –claena
Looking very preppy in a blue striped shirt, Sanjaya dances around the stage singing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough.” His eyes, his smile, and his curls sparkle and I imagine every young girl out there just completely forgot to listen to the singing. Sanjaya has the IT factor. He excites and interests us. Unfortunately he doesn't have the vocal chops to match. –Deanie79
I liked Haley tonight – and that’s saying something because I haven’t liked her at all before. It wasn’t outstanding, but it was overall pretty darn good. Although, Paula gave her the kiss of death by saying she looked nice, Simon actually agreed with me… --sportsgirl33
Chris Richardson (The Boss): My feeling about his performance was mixed. On one end, he commanded the audience and his ability to connect with the audience is very strong. On the other end, it was a vocally weak performance. –spaceyfi7

American Idol Grapevine
Some thought America got it right last night, while others are convinced that America is one sandwich short of a picnic. But the varying opinions are what make it fun, especially on the MyIdol Message Boards. Check out some of the comments on there right now, listed below. Have more to add? Start your own thread or write a recap using the MyIdol Message Boards. If we really like your fan recap, we might even use it for our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a “slice” of your brilliance to showcase in our “Idol Grapevine” column. Either way, let us know your thoughts!
If you stuck around until the bitter end, then you witnessed the single greatest exit in six seasons of American Idol. Midway through “Feeling Good,” Leslie began the scat portion of her arrangement. Then, in a moment of inspired genius, she stopped. She looked dead into the camera and asked in perfect pitch and rhythm, “Why did I decide to scat?” She paused for a momentary, laughter-laced musical interlude, and concluded the show with the splendidly sung lyric, “America don’t care for jazz.” --onemanswarm
In my previous recap I mentioned that Nick needed more umph in his performance of Fever and it seems America agreed. Nick has a terrific voice but he needs to work on those skills which make a performer interesting and exciting. I enjoyed the performance tonight better. –Deanie79
The first group of guys entailed Phil, Chris Sligh, Sundance, Blake, Jared and Nick. Who didn't suspect it was Jared or Nick? Hey - it was Nick! Very predictable. He's not a bad singer, but he's definitely not in the upper echelons of this group. –ChrissieD1981
Next up we had Kellie Pickler perform. You know she was actually better than she was when she was on the show. Also, it still seems as though she’s not the smartest tool in the shed. –spaceyfi7
Sean Jones from Wisconsin was in the audience last night, beaming from ear to ear. He was the first winner of the AI Challenge. Question for next week: Which of the former AI winners was a big winner at the Grammies this year? --Deanie79
Leslie, Alaina--gone, gone, gone! I kinda hoped Leslie would make it a couple more weeks, but I shor 'nuf did the Happy Dance in my PJs when Alaina bit the dust. I'm sure she's a very nice person and all (this is my attempt to be kind) but she was so out of her league among this group of strong singers. –idolwildone
Sundance and Gina are now officially tied for soaking up the most hankies. –oldbuthot
Guys. Back row. Phil will not be eliminated from “Idol,” but he may be eradicated if the Fashionistadors catch him in that hat. –onemanswarm
Next up was pretty Kellie Pickler, who sang the song she co-wrote about her mother called "I Wonder.” I had my tissues handy because she breaks my heart every time I see this. –Deanie79

American Idol Grapevine
As you’ll see in the MyIdol Message Board statements below, the girls came out last night with their game faces on…with a few exceptions. There are a lot of varying opinions on the boards, but that’s what makes them fun. Have something to add? Do so by starting a thread or writing a recap in MyIdol. If we like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a sentence or two to spread the word in our “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, we want to know your take on every “Idol” thing!
Stephanie Edwards sings “Dangerously in Love” by Beyonce (or Destiny’s Child, whichever you prefer). She gets serious props for singing a hard, hard song. The rhythms of that song are crazy. I think it’s a bold choice, and she does a decent job. –claena
Melinda Doolittle-Her voice is mesmerizing, she looks stunning, and she is humble almost to perfection! That was the single best American Idol performance to date. Melinda is in a totally different league. –jaduck
Antonella Barba - Dedication: her brother - Song: “Because You Love Me” - I really do not understand why this girl continues to try to sings songs that are just too big for her. The arrangement was awful and she came off sounding off-key and pitchy. Her only saving grace was the big note she hit which surprised me. –crislovesmusic
Leslie Hunt- Still loving this quirkerifically wonderful nerdy girl. She's so adorable. It was interesting seeing the same song done so differently form A.J.'s, whose version I loved. My two favorite underdogs, A.J. and Leslie...sigh. If only both could make it to the top twelve...or even the top ten so they could tour. –FanofTrouble
Jordin Sparks – “My Reflection” - I really like this girl. She has passion, heart, a great set of pipes, an infectious smile and she has not hit her "stride" yet. Watch out for this one-she will amaze us before this competition is over. –nhdavej
Lakisha Jones-In the words of Paula Abdul, she's just "real awesome.” And apparently, she’s quite the linguist. Who knew that "place" could be turned into a ten-syllable word? Impressive. She showed a bit more personality tonight and, while her performance might not have been the show-stopper that she gave last week, she was great. -Floresta
Haley "Queen of the Night" Scarnato. Can't wait to marry your fiancé? What's stopping you? Go now. Please. Pretty Please. –Icoffman
Alaina Alexander - Identity Crisis #2 - Is she country? Is she rock? Is she something yet to be defined? While the verse of the song was far better than the chorus, most of the song was off pitch, the words were unintelligible, and I thought it was a complete mess. I have no idea who this gal is musically, and this performance was unfortunately forgettable. –NENA
Gina Glocksen: Let me start out by saying that this was an excellent song choice for her. It really showcases that "part rocker, part belter" vibe that has gotten her this far. The song started out good and ended great and, despite what Simon says, I think she is one of the few singers in this competition who knows who she is on stage. –BellaVoce188
SABRINA SLOAN - "He Fills Me Up" by Whitney Houston - I really like Sabrina...she has a great look, and her voice is really very good...when she isn't screaming. Most of the song was ok, but when she got to the power notes, she forced them too much, and ended up shouting the song in places. –karledan

American Idol Grapevine
The Top 10 boys not only made a huge impression on the judges, but also on the MyIdol message boards. Read below for some snippets written by people about last night’s show. Think you could describe the night better? Start your own thread or write your own recap on the MyIdol message boards. If we like your fan recap, we might even use it as our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a portion of it to spread the word on the “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, we want to know your thoughts on the number one show in America!
Phil Stacey sang one of my all time favorite songs in the world. And he already starts out a thousand times better on his first line than last week! Gotta say folks...I really dig the timbre of his voice. It's unique and familiar all at the same time...that's a really interesting quality. –ProVocalist
Nick Pedro– he seems to have a Fever tonight – and it is a bit sharp……I do like the Rod Stewart quality to his voice –and really like the delivery on the word Fever! He was a little rushed and that was too bad – but I think he was settling in better as he went along. –FairyTaleAusie
Next up, Brandon Rogers dedicates his song, "Time after Time", to his grandmother who isn't around to see him "bloom". That is one of the great sadnesses of life. The people who matter most aren't always there to see our highs. I love his husky, Jamaican twang. He is very handsome and I think does a very nice job vocally. –Deanie79
Sanjaya Malakar is dedicating tonight’s performance to his grandfather, who passed away when Sanjaya was five. Taking the stage, Sanjaya makes it easy to solve the mystery of who inherited grandpa’s old clothes and even older record collection. With his flowing locks obscured by a fedora, The Mighty Samsanjaya lacks power on Tony Bennett’s “Steppin’ Out.” -onemanswarm
Blake Lewis sings Jamiroquai! No way! I love him. The song’s called “Virtual Insanity.” This guy is so great..amazing voice, amazing rhythm, so creative… love, love, love. I can even forgive the hat. He does a little beat box breakdown in the middle, and I thought I’d hate if he did that, but he balances it perfectly. If ever a man was born to be on stage… -claena
Chris Sligh is playing the AI game like a poker whiz. He chooses the right song, portrays a lovely personality that warms to people's hearts, and he DOES HAVE a very good voice. Hearing him sing 'Trouble' was just soothing. He didnt oversing or overdramatize. He simply brought it. –idolize_me_again
AJ Tabaldo - Technically, I think he is probably one of the two best male singers. He is on key all the time and has a beautiful tone to his voice. He is passionate about his music, and you can see that when he performs. I like this guy a lot, but I think that even with his vocal prowess, he will struggle in this competition. He looks like your next door neighbor; just an average guy...and I think that will inevitably hurt him. –BellaVoce188
Sundance showed real emotion talking about his son and, personally, I thought his son would have been proud of his dad tonight. He seemed to go back to his Southern bluesy roots with this song….lots of personality, lots of range and overall a very good job. –crislovesmusic
Next comes Jared, who's unapologetically going for the female vote with his unbuttoned suit and choice of the Love Master himself, Marvin Gaye's love anthem "Let's Get It On.” For the most part, I think it worked. He made a big step up in both the voice and the charisma department. –The_Right_Stuff
Chris R - Geek in the Pink dedicated to his outspoken grandma – I would remember this just for the weird title. I’m not familiar with this song but that’s probably because I’m old, like Grandma. But I know a good performance when I see one, and this was it. -kkppwm

American Idol Grapevine
The word on the boards seems to be that Simon was right when he claimed that the women “laid down the gauntlet” this week. Read the comments below from the MyIdol Message Boards for more on the Top 12 girls’ performances. If you have something to add, we encourage you to do so! Start a thread or write a recap using the MyIdol Message Boards. If we like your fan recap, we might even use it for our official Americanidol.com show recap. Or we might just use a pearl of wisdom or two for our “Idol Grapevine.” Either way, we’re looking for your take on American Idol.
While Dolittle and Lakisha certainly ripped the competition to shreds, let us not forget probably my most “favoritest” performance of the night - Miss Stephanie Edwards. She went first so it's easy to forget that she tore down the house. When she fell to her knees, I leapt to my feet. Amazing. –Icoffman
Singing fourth was Sabrina Sloan, singing “Never Loved a Man the Way That I Love You” by Aretha Franklin. Song Choice: Whoa! Now that’s what they mean by “song choice.” It completely worked for her voice. –dchambers59
Amy Krebs = 6 out of 10 / Before I get to the meat, I want to say that I thought she sounded all right...she didn't do badly. However, she sounded like someone singing karaoke. I have heard many females sing better than this in bars. –heathalvarez
The taped intro for Nicole Tranquillo focused on her fondness for group performances. Seconds into Chaka Khan’s “Stay,” it is easy to see why. How do I say this tactfully? Nicole lacks the soul for a cut like that. –onemanswarm
Gina Glocksen, 22, Naperville, Ill.: Really hard song to sing and she sang it well. She has a big voice and she chose a song where she could show that off. –sportsgirl33
Jordin Sparks was fun and I love her voice. She will stick around. At only 17 she has quite a future before her and I look forward to seeing her grow. –Loriann
Our last performer of the evening is our single mom, Lakisha Jones, aged 27, from Michigan. Her hair is much more becoming than in auditions and her dress works. She gives her daughter an amazing performance to remember her fourth birthday. She belted out, "And I am Telling You, I’m Not Going,” and we believe her. –Deanie79
Melinda Doolittle - song: Since You've Been Gone - another Aretha Franklin classic but she pulled it off. Lots of personality and confidence and she is definitely a frontrunner for me. The judges take: Randy thought it was Da Bomb, Paula thinks she is a frontrunner, and Simon said incredible. My grade: A. –crislovesmusic
Alaina Alexander-I'm glad she's got Brass In Pocket, cuz she'll get no platinum on her wall. –ibrmg
Leslie: I liked her performance; it was very strong, maybe a little too strong. Simon said she performed like she was embarrassed and ungainly. Simon, you should be embarrassed by those comments. She was actually quite good. I started to wake up at this point. –spaceyfi7
Antonella Barba – First of all, I must say that this girl is some kind of gorgeous! That being said, this was horrible. Absolutely everything about it was horrible. Her voice sounded bad, she was out of tune, she didn’t perform very well, she picked the wrong song, she looked nervous…etc. I wish I could be nicer than that, but I can’t. –Guyfromnowhere
Haley Scarnato is a band singer from San Antonio. We get another Celine song, "It's all Coming Back to Me Now". Her voice and tone are very nice. She needs to work on her phrasing. The tempo drags...don't know why these girls are slowing down in the middle of their songs??? Love her voice though...she will sound great with the right song. This wasn't it. –karledan
It’s like watching season three all over again, when we had 'power belters' like Fantasia, Latoya, Jennifer, etc, ‘cuz now we have at least 5 big voices out there. –idolise_me_again
