PEOPLE Gets the Scoop on the Top 10
PEOPLE Magazine's upcoming issue features an in-depth look at the Top 10 people competing for the esteemed title of "American Idol." It delves into some of the ways that the hopefuls differ from other seasons, and one of those distinguishing features was excessive nerves and forgotten lyrics at the very beginning of the season. Most have recovered. However, Randy Jackson tells PEOPLE of Sanjaya Malakar, "He's never returned to form. The nerves are killing him." But the article also discusses Sanjaya's massive following, which has kept his voting numbers more than strong enough to keep him in the competition.
The best part of the article is definitely the little known facts that are revealed about each of the Top 10. Jordin Sparks tells PEOPLE that she's been watching "Idol" since its inception, and that you will find some 'N Sync and Hanson on her iPod! Chris Sligh opens up about his parents being missionaries and how it was difficult for them, as Christians, to hear that Chris was pursuing rock music. They are supportive, however, and even watch the show on a military network in Germany. Melinda Doolittle tells PEOPLE that, because she's the oldest of all of them, the other contestants call her "Mama!" Chris Richardson, who's been compared to Justin Timberlake all season, reveals to the magazine that he was in a studio once when Justin was actually recording, and he even got to play his guitar for him. Single ladies take note: Blake Lewis dishes to PEOPLE that he and his girlfriend broke up right before Hollywood week, and even admits that he "has no game." When asked about his recent notoriety, Sanjaya Malakar told PEOPLE, "I don't want to be really angry or hurt, so I don't read what they say about me in the press or online." LaKisha Jones admits to some insecurities, saying "I'm a little self-conscious because I'm the heaviest girl of the bunch." Resident "Rocker Chick," Gina Glocksen, tells PEOPLE that executive producer Nygel Lythgoe suggested that Gina take out her tongue piercing, as it might affect her votes. She followed his advice for the first couple of weeks, but then put the tongue stud back in. Haley Scarnato is tickled to know that she has a fan club called "Haley's Comet," but much like Sanjaya, she doesn't want to know much else about what's being said about her. Phil Stacey admits to PEOPLE that the reason behind his audition is that he missed the wedding of a friend of his, and auditioning for American Idol was the way he made it up to this friend.
